Leading up to a competition you have a couple options when it comes to water. You can drink distilled water, tap water, or spring water. As far as drinking distilled water before a competition is a big NO NO. The reason for this is distilled water will actually leech electrolytes out of your body making you appear flat. A great example behind this is think about cleaning up a sticky popsicle. If you use regular tap water it isn't going to do that great of a job when trying to clean it up. Now if we use distilled water the sticky popsicle is completely gone. As a bodybuilder...water means everything. When you're on stage you want your body to look tight throughout your midsection while still maintaining that rounded look of your muscles. Essentially I'm speaking upon water retention at the intracellular level. Now you ask yourself..."who cares if you drink tap water or spring water...it's just water, right?" For someone who's prepping for a competition and trying to look a certain way on stage it means everything. Tap water usually has a certain number of milligrams of sodium in it which you can't actually measure unless you have it tested. For a bodybuilder it's more economical to go to the store and buy a gallon jug of spring water so you know how much water you drank throughout the day and you can assure yourself there is no sodium in the spring water.
